Glasgow Technology Network - Web Design using CSS, XHTML, jQuery and AJAX

Web Design is one of the hottest topics in the technology field these days. And for a properly Search Engine Optimisable and aesthetically pleasing website, it is important to do the web design using CSS and XHTML.

However, just a good looking website is no longer sufficient. Clients are looking for more and more functionality all the time. And for that, the jQuery JavaScript library provides fantastic components.

This combined with AJAX can make any website look very professional.

Stefan Pretty of Pretty Klicks will be sharing his knowledge and experience in this arena with us.

Schedule:

17:30 for 18:00 - Registration and Open Networking
18:00 to 18:15 - Welcome
18:15 to 19:15 - Presentation by Stefan Pretty of Pretty Klicks
19:15 to 20:00 - Questions and Answers and Open Networking
20:00 - End of the event

There will be a raffle for one license of JetBrains intelliJ IDEA.

There will be teas, coffees, soft drinks, wines, beers and nick nacks available to keep us going.

I will arrange notices on the ground floor of the campus to point you to the room. So watch out for these on the day!

I have been working with Stefan for some time now. I now have full appreciation of what he does. The presentation was fantastic. And given that Stefan has never given a presentation like this before, it was absolutely spot on. The networking before and after the event was great. Even my 13-year-old son enjoyed the event and could not stop talking about it on our way home.

I found this event very interesting. I was especially interested in seeing how some of these "magically effects" that are common place on popular sites actually seem much more simple to implement than I expected. Stefan clearly put in plenty of effort being prepared for the event and did a good job at adapting at the request of the group. Also quite enjoyed the raving dog!

I enjoyed the talk, but someone who was new to these concepts would have got lost in the acronyms. It would also have benefited from an introduction to the concepts being discussed, rather than ploughing straight into examples (a two second description of what CSS is, for example, before using it in depth in conjunction with jQuery). Essentially the talk focussed on an example of how powerful a few of the jQuery procedures are, and how they can be used with CSS to create dynamic content in a website. It was a good example that showed how all of these technologies can be used together.

Excellent but time constrained, would have enjoyed a longer more detailed talk

Some good content. Stefan provided some missing parts of the jigsaw for me. I think the overall presentation was just at the right level. I particularly enjoyed how some keep-fit was cleverly incorporated into the presentation :-D

Good presentation and relevant to many people - not really as relevant as I thought it would be for me

Stefan had put together a good demo of jQuery and AJAX and really explained it well.
