Glasgow Technology Network - Ruby on Rails

Ruby and Ruby on Rails have influenced many technologies and frameworks.

When Ruby on Rails first hit the market, it was a revolution in the way web developers created websites, using DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) and Convention Over Configuration to minimise code and configuration.

Of course, since then, frameworks like JBoss Seam and Yii PHP framework have taken inspiration from same mechanism and have taken it a few steps further.

However, Ruby on Rails still continues to be the market leader of MVC frameworks where very little code is auto-generated.

In a world where a programmer cannot rely on a single language or framework to survive, Ruby on Rails continues to be a leading choice.

Schedule:

17:30 to 18:00 - Registration and Open Networking
18:00 to 19:15 - Ruby on Rails Presentation by Paul Wilson
19:15 to 20:00 - Questions and Answers and Open Networking
20:00 - End of the event

A bit about our presenter Paul Wilson:

Paul is an Agile/Extreme Programming coach and coder who has worked with many teams to improve their process and 'Agility'. He has been practising Test-Driven Development since 2000, and other Agile practices since 2002. He is an active member of the local Ruby and Agile communities, and co-organiser of the Scottish Ruby Conference.

Paul currently codes mostly in Ruby and Objective-C but is open minded about other languages. He has spoken on topics such as organising a regional conference, working with resistance, and acceptance and test-driven development at events including European Rails Conference, The Naked Agilist Conference, and as a guest lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian and Napier Universities.

Paul currently heads the UK office of boutique software development house, EdgeCase

There will be a raffle for one license of JetBrains ReSharpner.

There will be teas, coffees, soft drinks, wines, beers and nick nacks available to keep us going.

Good in-depth presentation, many thanks for that.
It would have been even better if a real-life solution would have been presented.

Thanks for the interaction and the lively session on Wednesday, everyone. I also appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism: I'll try and take it on board.

I've put the rough script for the IRB session and supporting files up on Github here: http://github.com/paulanthonywilson/ruby_irb_demonstratio...

Is anyone aware of a Ruby group in Glasgow?

Paul C: The ScotRUG mailing list might be a good place to ask about setting up Glasgow Based meetings. There's a few West Coast based people in the group, I believe. http://groups.google.com/group/scotrug

A very in-depth presentation. While most RoR presenters concentrate only on Rails, Paul spoke about both Ruby and Rails. Excellent presentation!!!

Enjoyed the presentation - more technical than I had expected but Paul does know his stuff. Could have benefited from more of an overview initially as to how "Ruby" and "Rails" linked with each other and what place they have in the market place rather than diving straight into the technical detail of Ruby, but despite being a Ruby / Rails novice I was able to soon pick up where he was going. An advantage / disadvantage matrix in comparison to other languages / infrastructures would have led me more to think "for this problem - I would be best to consider Ruby on Rails" and so led me more into wanting to try and use it. Questions from the floor helped answer some of these questions but a section on this would have helped by overall understanding.

Was a good intro although it appeared that the presenter maybe did not follow his original plan. Maybe we should have left questions to the end. Ruby/Rails is a big subject to cover in just a couple of hours. The presenter assumed that we knew more about Ruby than we did. I would like to see more on Ruby/Rails. Was definitely worth attending.
